Heart of a giant foundation
Our Story
The HeartOfAGiant Foundation was founded by Somaneh Bouba Diemé, an engineer and entrepreneur from Mali and Senegal.
How It All Started
In 2012, at the age of 26, while living in South Africa, Bouba was diagnosed with a congenital heart condition known as left ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy. Since October 2016, Bouba has been waiting for a heart transplant. While he waits for a donor’s heart, he lives with an LVAD Heartmate3 pump implanted in his heart in early 2017.
During our inaugural year, we developed a partner network of hospitals, health centers, and community development organizations to deliver care support, education and coaching, and community activities to support disease management and treatment adherence. Our current partners include the American Heart Association, Boston Medical Center, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Wellframe, Meeriad, Community Servings, and other organizations and groups.
Our target population consists primarily of BIPOC and other disadvantaged adults in Dorchester, Mattapan, and nearby areas.
Following his experience with heart disease, Bouba became intently committed to raising awareness about hypertension and other cardiac conditions, particularly in predominantly BIPOC communities.
“My goal is to use my lived experience to help eliminate preventable harm and improve the management of chronic health conditions and non-communicable diseases in our communities.”
As a result, he founded the Heart of a Giant Foundation in
2018 as a nonprofit organization with a mission to foster healthy
outcomes for patients managing chronic heart disease.
